The scope and sequence in the CTC science classes depends on the ultimate goal of the students and parents.
The following electives will be offered, and will meet the Jr. High Science requirements: Life Science and Earth Science. General high school science classes that will be offered are: Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Forensic Science, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Astronomy will also be offered in the 2009-2010 school year and will meet high school graduation requirements.

This class is a continuation of the study of Earth and Life Science. Concepts in Life Science will include a study of bones and muscles, nerves and senses, digestion, heart and lungs, and skin and immunity. Concepts in Earth Science will include climate, clouds, storms, weather information, meteorology, ocean movement and the sea floor. A variety of methods will be used for this class including hands on projects, reading, note taking, tests and in-class labs. Students will be interacting in class but will be working from their own skill level. Supply fee includes all books, hand-outs, notebooks, in-class lab supplies and most project supplies. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.

This class is a concept study of the sciences designed to prepare students for upper level science classes that have higher level math. The goal is to build a foundation to prepare students for the varied divisions of science. Unit studies include matter, atoms, molecules and elements, chemical reactions, energy, electricity, magnetism, sound, light, force and simple machines. A variety of methods will be used for this class including hands on projects, text book reading, research papers, worksheets, tests and in-class labs. Students will be expected to complete assignments on the days we are not in class. Supply fee includes ALL books, hand-outs, notebooks, in-class lab supplies and most project supplies. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.

Biology

Tutor: Sarah Crockett | sarahcrockett@cox.net

The purpose of this class will be to give students a basic understanding of all life and how various systems of creation work. Class topics will include: Botany, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Creation, and the theory of Evolution (so that students can refute the world’s view with God’s Word). Students will participate in this class through labs (including dissections), discussions, videos, observation exercises, lectures, tests, and homework assignments. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, notebooks, and all basic materials needed in class; textbook is not included in supply fee.

NOTE: There will be one required field trip scheduled for a day class is not in session. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.

Human Anatomy & Physiology

Tutor: Sarah Crockett | sarahcrockett@cox.net
Grades: 10th-12th Class Limit: 5-16 Time: Tuesday &Thursday, 9:55a-11:15a
Textbook: Included in supply fee
Prerequisite: Biology
Class Fee: $702 (9 payments of $45 Tutor, $33 Operational/Lab)
Supply Fee: $75

The purpose of this class is to give students a more in-depth look at the structure and function of the human body. This will include an in-depth study of the 11 systems of the human body and how they work separately and together. Students will participate in science through labs (including dissections), discussion, observation exercises, lectures, tests, and homework assignments. A research paper will be required of each student during the first semester and a tri-fold display with an oral presentation will be due during the second semester. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, notebooks, textbook, and all basic materials needed in class.

Prerequisite: None
Class Fee: $702 (9 payments of $45 Tutor, $33 Operational/Lab)
Supply Fee: $70

The purpose of this class is to give students a basic understanding of the field of forensic science. Some of the topics covered will be fields in the study of forensic science, evidence, crime scene processing, etc. Student will participate in science through labs (including dissections), discussions, observation exercises, lectures, tests, and homework assignments. A tri-fold display and individual oral presentation will be due at the end of the first semester. Supply fee includes all materials for this class including the textbook.
