Science
The scope and sequence in the CTC science classes depends on the ultimate goal of the students and parents. The following electives will be offered, and will meet the Jr. High Science requirements: Life Science and Earth Science. General high school science classes that will be offered are: Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry. Forensic Science, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Astronomy will also be offered in the 2009-2010 school year and will meet high school graduation requirements.
This class is an in-depth study of life science including plants and animals. It will include a study of life cycles, photosynthesis and metamorphosis. We will be classifying the plant and animal kingdom. A variety of methods will be used for this class including hands-on projects, reading, note-taking, tests, in-class labs, and at least one field trip. Students will be interacting in class but will be working from their own skill level. Supply fee includes ALL books, hand-outs, notebooks, in-class lab supplies and project supplies. Students may be added mid-year with tutor's permission.
The purpose of this class will be to give students a basic understanding of all life and how various systems of creation work. Class topics will include: Botany, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Creation, and the theory of Evolution (so that students can refute the world’s view with God’s Word). Students will participate in this class through labs (including dissections), discussions, videos, observation exercises, lectures, tests, and homework assignments. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, notebooks, and all basic materials needed in class. NOTE: There will be one REQUIRED field trip scheduled for a day class is not in session. Students maybe added mid-year with tutor’s permission.
Students will participate in science through labs, discussions, videos, observation exercises, lectures, homework assignments, quizzes and exams. Topics will include Intro to Chemistry, Matter, Stoichiometry Gases, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonds, Nuclear and Organic Chemistry. Supply Fee includes materials for labs, handouts, and all basic materials needed in class. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.
Please note: The textbook should be NEW EDITION ONLY. New textbooks contain the Workbook in them. If a used textbook is purchased a new Workbook must be purchased. Earth Science will be taught from the Christian perspective using the Bob Jones text. Students will learn to discern truth concerning creation vs. evolution. Class topics will include: the Celestial Sphere, the Atmosphere, the Lithosphere and the Hydrosphere. Students will participate in science through lecture, labs, discussions, observation exercises, tests and homework assignments. There will be a visual project and oral presentation due in each semester. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, notebooks and all basic materials needed in class. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.
Life Science will be taught from the Christian perspective using the Bob Jones text. Class topics will include: the Foundations of life Science, Heredity and the Origin of Life, Concepts in Microbiology and Plant Biology, Concepts in the Animal Kingdom, the Nature of the Environment and Structure and Function of the Human Body. Students will participate in science through lecture, labs (including dissections), discussions, tests and homework assignments. A paper will be required of each student as well as an oral presentation over the paper. Supply fee includes materials for labs, handouts, notebooks and all basic materials needed in class. Students may be added mid-year with tutor’s permission.
The purpose of this class will be to give students a basic understanding of meteorology. Some of the topics covered will be: the atmosphere, tornados, hurricanes, winter weather, solar radiation, buoyancy, pressure, temperature, and moisture. Students will participate in science through labs, discussions, observation exercises, lectures, tests, and homework assignments. Supply fees include materials for labs, handouts, TEXTBOOKS, WORKBOOKS and other basic materials needed in class. NOTE: It is unknown at this time if there will be any fieldtrips required for this class. Should the need for a fieldtrip arise, parents and students will be given a one-month notification. Students may not be added mid-year.
Students will learn the basics and introduction of Chemistry and Physics. Students will cover topics such as metric measurements, basic unit analysis, speed/acceleration, light, sound, simple machines and more. This class will include labs. Supply Fee includes materials for labs, handouts, and all basic materials needed in class. Students may be added mid-year with tutor's permission.
