Mathematics

*The scope and sequence for CEC math classes are as follows:**CEC recommends that each student progress as far as abilities allow in the Algebra curriculum. Geometry is recommended after Algebra 1. Consult one of the Math teachers if you have a question about which class your student should take. There are math placement tests to help you make the best decision.*

The Algebra 1 curriculum teaches the algebraic system logically from one concept to the next. We will cover real numbers, linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of equations, quadratic equations, and rational expressions and equations. New concepts are explained with examples an are followed by practice problem sets and review exercises. Due to the amount of work necessary to complete the entire course in the academic year, students are expected to complete daily assigned work. This is also necessary so that new concepts are practices daily ensuring mastery. The supply fee includes the quizzes and tests book. Students will need to purchase Abeka Algebra 1, 2nd edition. This is a non-consumable textbook and can be bought gently used at Bibliomania or on various Homeschool buy sell trade sites. Other supplies needed: ruler, compass, protractor, and a scientific calculator.

**ALGEBRA 2**

Teacher: Pamela Searcy Email: [email protected]

Grades: 10-12 Class Limit: 5-10

Time: Tuesdays/Thursdays 1:30PM-2: 50 PM

Textbook: Abeka Algebra 2

Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry recommended.

TI-84 calculator advised, but not required.

Supply Fees: $20.00

Total Class Fees: $855 – 9 Monthly Payments of $95 as follows:

Teacher: $55.00/month payable to Teacher

Operational Fee: $40.00/month payable to CEC

Moving on to more advanced algebraic concepts, in Algebra 2 we will build upon previously learned algebra and progress into complex concepts such as graphing, solving quadratic equations, completing the square, radicals and exponents, imaginary numbers, and logarithms. Due to the amount of work necessary to complete the entire course in the academic year, students are expected to complete daily assigned work. This is also necessary so that new concepts are practiced daily mastery. Supply fee includes tests books and quizzes. Students will need to purchase Abeka Algebra 2 second edition. This is a non-consumable textbook and can be bought gently used at Bibliomania or on various Homeschool buy sell trade sites. Other supplies needed: ruler, compass, protractor, and a scientific calculator or a graphic calculator like the TI-84. (Bibliomania also sells used graphic calculators)

**PRE-CALCULUS/CALCULUS**

This course covers key concepts of calculus building on what is learned in both trigonometry and algebra 2. Students will learn how to thoroughly present equations using a combination of trigonometry and analytic geometry. Students will learn calculus foundations such as empirical data, polar coordinates, three-dimensional planes, and calculus derivatives. This class will use a scientific calculator and graphing paper.

The purpose of this class is to prepare students for higher level math such as Algebra and Trigonometry. It is designed to not only build upon concepts students already know but to reinforce learning of the concepts through the 6th and 7th-grade levels. The year will start with placement testing to identify each child’s skill level. Some of the concepts covered in this course are; whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent’s, factoring, graphing, geometry and introduction to algebra. Due to the amount of work necessary to complete the entire course in the academic year, students are expected to complete daily assigned work. This is also necessary so that new concepts are practices daily ensuring mastery. This class is offered as a two day a week class and designed to utilize two years to fully master the concepts. 6th grade supply fee includes consumable textbook, quizzes and tests book. 7th grade supply fee includes the quizzes and tests book. 7th-grade students will need to purchase Abeka Basic Mathematics fourth edition.
