Attention will be given to sentence and paragraph structure as well as
punctuation, spelling and other grammatical issues. As necessary, this class will include vocabulary and grammar
exercises that address mistakes students are making in their writing. Curriculum begins with paragraph writing,
then moves on to format writing (including but not limited to descriptive,

As an overview and introduction to literature, this course will explore a collection of classic works from major world authors. Studies will include short fiction, essay, verse, and a novel. In the context of the text selections, we will study the literary elements of setting, theme, character, conflict, plot, and point of view as well as the interpretation of basic symbolism. In the poetry unit, students will study the poets, their styles and the imagery and figurative language of their poetry. Students will complete an independent study project over a poet of their choice over the course of the year. In addition to selections from the text, we will also study one novel. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss the selections both as a class and within small discussion groups. There will be writing assignments approximately every 5-6 weeks as well as 2-3 memory assignments throughout the year. I will be supplementing the class text with material from other sources to create a full year literature course. A NOTE ABOUT THE TEXT: As the 2nd edition is no longer available from Abeka, Bibliomania has reserved an adequate number of them for us under Amy Myers/CTC. Supply fee covers notebook and dividers, handouts and the novel.

of writing at the high school level. A
precursor to the advanced level Composition IV class, Composition III spends
the first semester covering mode papers, including expository, descriptive,

work on computers whenever possible, both at home and at school, in order to
better prepare them for the requirements they will be expected to meet in
college and also to provide them with immediate feedback on their work. Supply fee is for notebook, copies, and

As an upper level high school literature course, this class will explore the works of major European authors through the forms of short fiction, essays, verse, drama, and novel. Class time will be a discussion format over the homework reading assignments both in a full class and small group setting. British literature is a very rewarding, but challenging study, requiring a significant amount of time and interpretive skills. Therefore, homework will require a minimum of 3 hours outside of class per week and will primarily involve reading/interpretive assignments and essays approximately every 4-5 weeks. In addition to the shorter selections in the text, our studies will also include a novel and a Shakespeare drama. An additional novel list will be given to students from which they will choose one novel to complete as an independent study project. There will be 2-3 memory assignments as this is an important component of literary studies. British Literature can be recorded as either an English credit or elective on the high school transcript, and is an excellent complement to the study of World or European History. Supply fee covers notebook and dividers, handouts, and copies of the novel and Shakespeare drama.
