This class will start with an introduction of writing for students who have not had much experience. Attention will be given to sentence and paragraph structure as well as punctuation, spelling and other grammatical issues.  As necessary, this class will include vocabulary and grammar exercises that address mistakes students are making in their writing.   Curriculum begins with paragraph writing, then moves on to format writing (including but not limited to descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive styles).   We also study creative writing and begin literary analysis and simple research skills.   Although there is not a formal text, I pull from a variety of reputable writing sources I have collected over the years. Focus is on improving student writing through in-class consultation and rewriting to improve on work as it is completed.  Additional focus at this stage is on reducing the anxiety that many students feel about writing.   Supply fees cover a regular notebook, activity sheets and other materials.

As an upper level high school literature course, this class will explore the works of major European authors through the forms of short fiction, essays, verse, drama, and novel.  Class time will be a discussion format over the homework reading assignments both in a full class and small group setting.  British literature is a very rewarding, but challenging study, requiring a significant amount of time and interpretive skills.  Therefore, homework will require a minimum of 3 hours outside of class per week and will primarily involve reading/interpretive assignments and essays approximately every 4-5 weeks.  In addition to the shorter selections in the text, our studies will also include a novel and a Shakespeare drama.  An additional novel list will be given to students from which they will choose one novel to complete as an independent study project.  There will be 2-3 memory assignments as this is an important component of literary studies.  British Literature can be recorded as either an English credit or elective on the high school transcript, and is an excellent complement to the study of World or European History.   Supply fee covers notebook and dividers, handouts, and copies of the novel and Shakespeare drama.
